VusicOBX Summer Series Kicks off Memorial Day Weekend with KC & The Sunshine Band

By Molly Harrison | Thursday, May 23, 2024

VusicOBX, the live music series that combines the sounds of national touring bands with the stunning sound views at Roanoke Island Festival Park, is back for its fourth summer on the Outer Banks.

Founders Rebecca and Brad Meyers and their team have planned nine shows that appeal to a range of ages and musical tastes.

“We are stretching out our genres this year,” Rebecca says. “We’ve got two shows this year that appeal to an older generation, KC & The Sunshine Band with The Chairmen of the Board and then The Beach Boys. This is a great opportunity to see these bands right in our backyard.”

Rebecca says she’s excited about KC & The Sunshine Band this weekend because it’s something high energy and different.

“There are going to be 18 people on stage, between the musicians and backup dancers,” she says.

Other genres for the summer shows include alternative rock, classic rock, ska punk, reggae pop, country and emo rock. If you don't know emo rock, Rebecca encourages you to come out for the OBX is For Lovers Festival in July. She's looking forward to this show because she says the crowd last year was full of some of the nicest people she'd ever met.

VusicOBX is also stretching out the dates into the off-season a bit. The Memorial Day weekend show is their earliest yet, and they’ve got a show after Labor Day with Jamey Johnson.

Rebecca says this year people can expect to see an expanded Art Village. As in years past, Shirley Cook will set up her interactive art exhibit with a different theme for each show. For the KC & The Sunshine Band, the theme is disco.

The whole Meyers family loves music, from Brad and Rebecca, who see as much live music as they can, to their son, Jackson, a drummer, to their daughters, Ellie and Veda. “Music is part of our DNA and plays throughout our house during all waking hours,” Rebecca says.

So you can be sure that the VusicOBX festivals have a family-friendly vibe, with children welcome and teens in a safe enviroment.

Sharing their love of music with the residents and visitors of the Outer Banks is the Meyers' way of giving back to the community.

“The core of why we do this is the music,” Rebecca says. “Seeing people happy listening to live music makes me cry at almost every show, a joyful cry. The payback is seeing how many people are moved by the music and needed it. It’s good for the soul.”
