At the Heart of a Village

Located at the heart of historic Corolla, Spry Creek is the brainchild of Outer Banks locals Karen and John Whitfield. More than a decade ago they converted Karen’s dad’s old garage into one of the most fun and interesting shops for home accents and gifts on the northern beaches.

“Although we’re located in a beach environment, we don’t limit ourselves to beach themes,” explains Karen. She’s right. While you’ll find plenty of local and regional items such as artwork, candles and textiles, the Whitfields enjoy changing things up each year to showcase everything from scarves and shawls woven in India to Mexican flower pots, customizable ceramic house numbers from Spain, funky On U Richmond-based jewelry, luxurious hand-loomed bamboo throws, home fragrances, vintage-inspired home accessories such as wire light fixtures and a new line of pottery from the Kew Royal Botanical Gardens of London.

“We’ve evolved over the years,” Karen says. “But mostly we try to keep it simple and offer things you just can’t find everywhere else.”
