The Joy of Music Making

By Molly Harrison | Thursday, October 28, 2021

You may not expect to find a world-class music academy in a laid-back beach community like the Outer Banks, but that’s exactly what you’ll find at Ascencion Music Academy in Kill Devil Hills. Lifelong musical teaching artists and performers Gordon Kreplin and Cathy Pescevich Kreplin have built a year-round, highly versatile music school in which students of all levels can master the technical aspects as well as reap the joy of making music.

“Our main focus is to create fully literate, well-formed musicians who have total musicianship and technical skills,” Cathy says. “That way, we create lifelong musicians.”

Guided by the Kreplins, who both have nearly 40 years of musical experience, the academy employs three other highly experienced instructors and two teaching assistants. The faculty members are formally educated in music and music education and teach, perform, compose and record.

Ascencion offers instruction for students of all ages, from toddlers to seniors, in a wide range of styles from classical, contemporary, jazz, rock, pop, commercial, folk and world music, both in the studio and online. They welcome professional and visiting musicians and can offer coaching assistance with auditions, college admissions and more.

“We’re always happy to make new friends,” Cathy says.
