The Personal Touch: The Life and Legacy of Joe Lamb, Jr.

By Leah Wingenroth | Tuesday, June 16, 2026

The story of Joe Lamb, Jr. & Associates began in a small real estate office in Nags Head nearly 60 years ago.

Joseph “Joe” Thomas Lamb, Jr. returned to eastern North Carolina after attending UNC Chapel Hill and paid a visit to the quiet beaches he remembered from childhood family vacations.

Back then, the islands were slower and sparsely populated. But Joe saw real potential.

Over the next half of a century, Joe and his wife, Ann, built and grew their real estate company on the values that guided their life: family, service, integrity and local knowledge. These values became the backbone of their work and, over time, the culture of the company itself.

Joe held the longest active real estate license in North Carolina, which he earned in 1957. Whether he was aiding families in picking the perfect vacation rental or finding their forever home, helping people with their real estate needs was his calling, one he continued to answer throughout his life and career.

But no matter how his company or the Outer Banks itself grew, Joe remained grounded by tradition, trust and a genuine love for his home. He was not interested in changing the character of the area. Rather, he wanted to preserve it and keep it at the heart of his work. His deep local expertise and steady approach helped guide homeowners and visitors, ensuring that development never lost sight of what made the region special in the first place.

Beyond his legacy of serving people through real estate is Joe’s commitment to the community as a whole. Joe invested far and wide in the Outer Banks, occupying leadership roles within the Outer Banks Chamber of Commerce, serving as a Dare County Commissioner and engaging in other aspects of public service and philanthropy. Joe and Ann were passionate about education and supported Dare County Schools and different North Carolina universities through scholarships.

Joe’s passing in January 2026 marked the end of a remarkable life, but not the end of his legacy as a pillar of the Outer Banks. His company’s enduring commitment to homeowners, care given to guests and investment in local causes all reflect his impact. Three generations of the Lamb family, alongside a team of dedicated employees, remain devoted to carrying out Joe’s mission to create a prop erty management company that homeowners and guests can always count on.

Though the Outer Banks evolves with each passing summer, the founding principles of Joe Lamb, Jr. & Associates remain the same: serving their guests and their community with “the personal touch,” a slogan that defined Joe’s approach to his business and to his life on the Outer Banks.
