A Place For All Tastes

When the staff at Fat Crabs sees visitors early in the week, they know they are likely to see them a second and third time before vacation’s end. For seven years, Fat Crabs has been serving up seafood favorites alongside famous, Eastern North Carolina smoky barbecue for a menu that leaves customers twice satisfied. Owner Brian Volk realized long ago that when it comes to large parties, it’s hard to please everyone, so he opened a restaurant that offers two distinct favorites not usually served in the same place.

This Corolla establishment started out with just a few tables and chairs and lines out the door. They’ve expanded into a neighboring space to allow for ample seating, local draft brews and a big ole fryer, but you can bet the crowds are still lined up in the height of summer. Brian says that he’s worked hard to maintain a fun, casual, hometown feeling – and he’s clearly succeeded! This place has just the right amount of chill. Those who prefer spoils from the water enjoy hard and soft shell blue crabs straight out of the Currituck Sound, fresh, local seafood to cook up at home and custom, made-to-order steamer pots. The cooks do wonders with steamed, sautéed and fried dishes too. On the barbecue spectrum, Fat Crabs offers a delicious smoked beef brisket in addition to barbecue classics. For the full culinary experience, try out the seafood menu one night and barbecue the next. It’s all good!
