A Tour to Welcome in the Holidays

By Beth P. Storie | Wednesday, October 9, 2024

The Manteo Preservation Trust Holiday Tour is a cherished tradition that beautifully showcases the unique blend of history, culture and festive spirit that defines the town of Manteo. Each year, on the first Saturday of December, this tour offers residents and visitors the opportunity to step inside some of Manteo’s most remarkable homes and buildings – both historic and newer – and experience them in their full holiday splendor. This year, the 17th Manteo Preservation Trust Holiday Tour promises to be more spectacular than ever, taking place on Saturday, December 7, from 1 to 6 p.m.

The Holiday Tour is an initiative of the Manteo Preservation Trust, an organization dedicated to preserving the architectural and cultural heritage of this picturesque waterfront town. The event is more than just a tour; it’s an invitation to immerse yourself in the rich history and warm community spirit that Manteo embodies. The Trust has carefully selected 10 locations for this year’s tour, offering a mix of historic charm and current elegance, all within a walkable distance. This year marks a special milestone as one of the featured homes celebrates but also its 100th anniversary, making the tour not just a visual delight but a journey through time.

Tour tickets will be sold online at manteopreservationtrust.com from October 9 at noon to December 6 at 5 p.m. Those who purchased tickets online may pick up their ticket (the tour brochure), at 108 Budleigh starting at 11:30 a.m. on the morning of the tour. Tickets may also be purchased on the day of the tour starting at 11:30 a.m. All tickets cost $25 and grant access to all the tour properties. Bicycles will be available on a first-come, first-served basis thanks to Manteo Cyclery.

As you stroll from one tour site to the next, you’ll be treated to a variety of holiday decorations, ranging from the elaborately ornate to the charmingly simple. Each site reflects the personality and style of its owners, offering not just a feast for the eyes but also a source of inspiration for your own holiday decorating. Whether you’re drawn to the classic elegance of traditional decor or the creative flair of contemporary design, the tour provides endless ideas for making your own home festive and inviting.

One of the highlights of the day is the chance to see Manteo’s other holiday decorations, including the town’s Christmas tree on the waterfront. As you walk along the streets, you’ll find yourself surrounded by beautifully adorned homes, twinkling lights and the gentle glow of candles in windows. The atmosphere is both peaceful and festive, a perfect way to embrace the holiday season.

For many, the Holiday Tour has become a tradition, a way to kick off the holiday season in a setting that feels both magical and timeless. Last year, nearly 600 people took part in the event, and this year’s tour is expected to attract even more visitors, drawn by the promise of a beautiful day spent in one of North Carolina’s most charming towns.

The timing of the Holiday Tour is perfect for those who want to experience more of what Manteo has to offer during the holiday season. Beginning on Friday evening, the town commences the holiday cheer with a pageant featuring local choirs, dance troupes, musical groups, a massive bonfire, free cider and Brunswick stew, the lighting of the town tree and, of course, a visit from Santa!

On Saturday morning, the same day as the tour, Manteo’s annual Christmas parade takes place, offering a lively and colorful display of holiday cheer. The parade is a beloved event in its own right, with floats, bands and participants from all over the Outer Banks coming together to celebrate the season. After enjoying the parade, visitors can have lunch at one of Manteo’s local restaurants, many of which will be offering special discounts to Holiday Tour attendees (you must pick up your tour brochure in advance to receive the discount). It’s the perfect way to make a full day – or weekend – of holiday festivities in Manteo.

Beyond the visual delights, the Holiday Tour is an opportunity to connect with the community and learn more about the town’s history and architectural heritage. The properties on the tour represent a wide range of styles and periods, from the lovingly preserved historic houses that tell the story of Manteo’s past to the newer structures that showcase the town’s ongoing growth that still honors the look and feel of this special place. Each has a story to tell, and the tour offers a chance to hear those stories from the owners themselves.

As you move from one site to another, you’ll not only appreciate the architecture and decor but also the sense of continuity and tradition that defines Manteo. The town’s quiet streets and waterfront views create a serene backdrop for the tour, enhancing the experience and making it easy to see why so many people are drawn to this inviting town.

The Manteo Preservation Trust Holiday Tour is more than just an event; it’s a celebration of the town’s past, present and future. It’s a time to come together with friends, family and neighbors to share in the joy of the season and to appreciate the beauty that surrounds us. Whether you’re a longtime resident or a first-time visitor, the Holiday Tour offers something for everyone – a glimpse into the heart of Manteo and a reminder of the simple joys that make the holiday season so special.

So, mark your calendar for Saturday, December 7, and make plans to join in this year’s Manteo Preservation Trust Holiday Tour. With tickets priced at just $25, it’s an affordable and delightful way to welcome the holidays, discover new decorating ideas and experience the warmth and charm of Manteo.
