If you’re new to surfing, the atmosphere at Hatteras Island Boardsports will make you feel at home with the sport. Owner Kevin Scalia and his team are eager to share their love of watersports with newbies and experienced folks alike. The shop features watersports gear, rentals and accessories as well as popular apparel. Their sunglasses, swimwear and surf-inspired clothing will have you feeling the beach lifestyle right away. Celebrating their 15th season, HIB also shares their love of surfing via lessons. While they offer advanced options, the vast majority of lesson takers are people who’ve never surfed. One of the unique aspects of the sport is that people can learn the basics relatively quickly, generally within one lesson. “Once you’ve ridden a wave and can stand up, then you can spend a lifetime improving and trying new things,” Kevin says. So drop by HIB if you’re looking to try something new — with the welcome you’ll get here, you might just find yourself with a lifelong love of surfing.
