A nice quiet week

Hunker down with a five-week drawing class at DCAC.

Although there is some great stuff to do this week, it's doubtful that we can reach the same pitch of excitement that we had last week on the Outer Banks. * Outer Banks Marathon weekend always whips up a lively atmosphere in the middle Banks, but Marathon weekend coupled with a full-on Nor'easter brought the fervor even further up a notch. That was fun!...

Though we miss all the visitors, it's going to be nice to have a quiet week on the Banks before everyone comes back for Thanksgiving...

Now that the evenings are dark, it's time to find an indoor focus for your nights. How about a drawing class? Chris Davenport is leading a five-week drawing course -Drawing: The Fundamentals and Beyond - on Wednesdays from 7 to 9 p.m. starting this week. (Nov. 17 through Dec. 15). Classes will be held at the Dare County Arts Council Studios in Manteo. Call (252) 473-5558 to register...

Here's a good place to start - or finish depending on your level of efficiency - your holiday shopping: All Saint's Episcopal Church's annual Holly Days Bazaar. It's on Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. * I've always found great locally made gifts at this event, and you know I'll be one of the ones who's starting the shopping, not finishing. * If you get there early enough you can purchase take-home casseroles to put in your freezer to feed your holiday guests. * This year the church is offering lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. * The church is on Pintail Drive in Kitty Hawk, across from Kitty Hawk Elementary School...

Personally, I find cold weather and fishing to be strange bedfellows, but what do I know? It's striper season and real anglers probably don't even notice the cold. * The 13th Annual Manteo Rotary Rockfish Rodeo tournament gives you a chance to prove your fishing abilities and maybe take home some prize money. Fishing is on Saturday from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. with the weigh in from 1 to 4 p.m. The awards dinner is Saturday at 6 p.m. Tournament headquarters is the Outdoor Pavilion at Roanoke Island Festival Park. * For info, call (252) 473-6644 or visit www.rockfishrodeo.org...

Eat for a good cause on Saturday at the Stew-N-Que Fund-raiser at Pigman's Barbecue in KDH. This is a benefit event for Mitchell Ryan Rodrigues, a senior at First Flight High School who has leukemia. It's from noon to 5 p.m. in a tent behind Pigman's, and there also will be music, beverages, a turkey toss and a silent auction...

Doesn't it sound nice to just plop down in a comfortable chair and be entertained for an hour or two? * Just the fact that I said that out loud might be a sign that I've been too busy lately. * If you've been going at my pace, you can relax and be entertained at a couple of places on Saturday...

The Outer Banks Forum is hosting the Greg Gelb Jazz Quartet at First Flight High School's auditorium. * Gelb is a key player in North Carolina's music scene, and this show is sure to be a hit. Show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $25 for adults and $12 for students. * See www.outerbanksforum.org to find out more...

UNC-Chapel Hill is presenting Scenes from Verdi Operas at Roanoke Island Festival Park on Saturday at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. * About 25 student singers will perform semi-staged scenes with a pianist. Both performances are free...

You definitely won't be sitting on your arse in a comfy chair if you head to Kelly's on Saturday night. Nationally known Pittsburg jam band Rusted Root is playing, so if you're in the mood to move that's where you need to be. Opening act Pawn Shop Lifters starts at 9 p.m. Get your tickets early in the week. They're 25 bucks...

Here's another place to get a groove on: The Frisco Jubilee will be rocking Rodanthe on Saturday night starting at 7:30 p.m. Head down to the Rodanthe-Waves Community Building to hear country, gospel, blues, pop and classic favorites from an all-star mix of local musicians - Martin Garrish and Friends, Herb "Speedy" Price and Frisco Jubilee musicians. Admission is only $10...

OK then. That gives you a nice range of options. Keep looking around the site for other things to do in the day and night. New things are being added every week. And feel free to post a comment. We'd love to hear from you...
