Outer Banks Swinging Mullets Bring Summer Baseball Back to the Beach

By Molly Harrison | Tuesday, May 26, 2026

Baseball is once again joining the lineup of Outer Banks summer activities.

The newly formed Outer Banks Swinging Mullets have officially arrived in Kill Devil Hills, bringing collegiate summer baseball back to the beach and creating another family-oriented activity for locals and visitors. The team opened its inaugural season on May 23 and will play through July 18 as part of the Tidewater Division of the Old North State League.

For longtime Outer Banks residents and visitors, summer baseball already carries a little nostalgia. Previous teams such as the Outer Banks Daredevils, Outer Banks Scallywags and Outer Banks Flying Dutchmen have played here over the years. Now the Swinging Mullets are stepping into that tradition while putting their own spin on summer baseball.

The quirky name Swinging Mullets pays homage to both the retro baseball hairstyle and the ubiquitous local fish and reflects this team’s fun attitude and Outer Banks pride.

The team calls TowneBank OBX Park at the First Flight High School Complex home. Located just minutes from the Wright Brothers Memorial and less than a mile from the ocean in Kill Devil Hills, the field provides a classic baseball setting in the warm coastal air.

The team consists of top-tier players from colleges, universities and hometowns throughout the country. Six of the players are from the Outer Banks who are home from school to play for the summer.

Behind the scenes, the team is backed by owner Jim Price, whose own connection to baseball runs deep. Price played baseball in both high school and college and now hopes to create something lasting for the Outer Banks community. His vision is for the games to become a place locals and visitors to gather — something fun, welcoming and rooted in community.

The coaching staff brings plenty of experience as well. Head coach and hitting coach Mikey Reynolds played at Texas A&M before being drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the fifth round of the 2013 MLB Draft. He also spent time in the St. Louis Cardinals and Arizona Diamondbacks organizations and played extensively in independent leagues. Assistant coach Corey Martin may be familiar to families for another reason — he’s the creator behind the popular Coach Corey Martin YouTube channel, where more than one million subscribers follow his energetic movement and activity content for kids.

But the Swinging Mullets are building something that goes beyond the game.

Their goal is to offer affordable, family-friendly entertainment. Nightly admission ranges from $5 to $7, while all fans age 18 and younger get in free at every game, making it an easy addition to a family vacation itinerary or local summer routine. Season passes, just $90, are available for devoted fans and a great way to support the team.

Every game aims to feel like an event, with nightly themes, food trucks, between-inning activities, contests and even a mullet toss – a distinctly Outer Banks experience.

Whether you’re a baseball fan, traveling with kids or simply looking for a new summer tradition, the Outer Banks Swinging Mullets are offering something that feels refreshingly simple: a summer night at the ballpark, a community gathering around the game and a hometown team to rally around.
