What Am I Missing?

The Manteo Farmers Market is in full swing on Saturdays.

As you read this, I'll be living large in the City of Lights. That's right, Paris. I've headed off-island for a taste of international culture and pain au chocolat. I'm trading in my SUV for the Metro and my view of the Roanoke Sound for a view of the Seine...

The only problem with my leaving the Outer Banks for the city is that I don't have proper city attire. * I don't know about you, but here on the sandbar I live in jeans, flip flops, T-shirts and the occasional sundress. If I put on my yoga pants for a class in the morning, I really have no qualms about wearing them all day long. * This casual wardrobe suits my work-at-home lifestyle perfectly until I go somewhere and start to worry about looking like the beach bumpkin that I am. * Luckily, I've recently made some great finds in the local shops that can carry me through a week in a city - until I can get back to my shorts and slaps...

So what will I miss this week?

The Manteo Farmers Market, for one. * I went to opening day last Saturday and was really stoked about all the great offerings - hot house tomatoes and fresh-picked veggies, Tracy Helton's yummy yummy local honey, Amy Crow's healthy plants and herbs, Chris Carroll's lemon-lavender cookies and confections, Susannah Burke's oatmeal cream pies and cinnamon buns, Tarheel Too's $3 pineapples, Farmer Dave's roasted nuts and nut mixes, plus pottery, jewelry, art and so much more. * If I lived in Manteo, I'd bike there on Saturday mornings, reusable grocery bag flying in the breeze...

On Saturday, I'll have to miss taking the kids to Youth Aviation Day at the Dare County Regional Airport in Manteo. * There will be skydivers and tandem jumpers, food, games, $10 airplane rides, $15 biplane rides, $20 helicopter rides, Kitty Hawk Kites climbing wall, RC Club flying model airplanes and a lot more. * I've been to this event in the past and it's fun, especially those quickie plane (and now helicopter) rides. * It's from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call 475-5572...

In Corolla on Saturday, there's the Surfside Scute 5K and Tiny Turtle Kids' Fun Run to raise funds for Ocean Rescue. * The 5K course winds through Corolla, and the Fun Run is for ages 10 and younger. * There will be awards and a special prize for the most creative face painting with ZINK, the traditional lifeguard sun protection. * A post-race party follows at Monteray Plaza. * Runners and walkers welcome. Go to www.corollaoceanrescue.com or call (252) 619-2285...

The Theatre of Dare is back this weekend with the second round of its show Meanwhile Back on the Couch. * People who saw it last weekend are liking this comedy. * See it Friday and Saturday nights at 7:30 p.m. or Sunday at 2 p.m. at the COA Roanoke Island Campus in Manteo. See www.theatreofdare.org or call 261-4064...

Here's something new and I don't have a lot of info on it, but a group called Casino Remembered is hosting the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra at the Wright Brothers National Memorial on Saturday. * It's a celebration of the 100th anniversary of jazz legend Artie Shaw's birthday and a tribute to Ras Wescott and the old Nags Head Casino all wrapped up in one. * If you remember the Casino (I do not), you'll like this one! * For info, email info@casinoremembered.net...

On Friday, The Pit in KDH is hosting singer/songwriter/actor/surfer Timmy Curran for a screening of his new surf movie The Union Express followed by Timmy and band performing songs from his new album VerseS. Movie starts at 9:30 p.m. and the music starts at 11 p.m. All ages are welcome; bar will be open for the over 21s... * On Saturday, the Pit's got phat blues, as they say, from Kelly Bell Band, always a favorite at The Pit...

Other nightlife highlights: Pat McGee Band is playing at Kelly's in Nags Head on Friday and Saturday nights at 9:30 p.m. * The Beagels are at Ocean Boulevard on Friday at 10:30 p.m. * Outer Banks Brewing Station has Shaman Culture on Friday and Mojo Collins playing the blues on Saturday. * Goombays has Formula on Saturday...

The Manteo community is gathering to support and raise money for local artist Genna Miles. * Genna suffered a mild stroke recently and spent an expensive week in ICU. She's better now but facing bills, so her friends are hosting an event on Sunday (23rd) at Poor Richard's in downtown Manteo. * For $10 you can get barbecue, music by The Wilder Brothers and Sea Level, and a chance in a raffle and silent auction. * It starts at 5 p.m...
