Offshore from Oregon Inlet
Inshore from Oregon Inlet

July is always an interesting month to me. I often refer to it as “mystery month.” You just never know what you’re going to get. There always seems to be something to catch, but what that something is can change from one day to the next.

It’s been a little while since my last fishing report on July 8, so I figured it was time for an update. Since then, we’ve caught everything from Spanish mackerel and bluefish on our nearshore trips to tilefish, triggerfish and seabass on our all-day bottom fishing trips, and mahi, blackfin tuna, and a few billfish on our offshore trolling trips.

Most of our groups have been more interested in bringing home fish for the table than chasing billfish, so we’ve tried to tailor each trip to what our customers wanted. It’s been a fun stretch, with every trip telling a different story.
