Surface and Undercurrents Opening Night
In August, our Courtroom Gallery will host a special group exhibition featuring work by North Carolina artists Lisa LeMair, Christina Lorena Weisner, Christopher Proto, Emily Holmes, Wendy Allen, Scott Solter and Ashley Paskov. Surface and Undercurrents: Influences from Iceland, the Arctic & the Anthropocene is a collaborative group exhibition that explores environmental themes. Ideas for this exhibit were developed during the artists' retreat in Iceland during the summer of 2023.
Each artist brings a focus on issues related to human-caused climate change and environmental responsibility, from the rise of invasive species (including humans!), the toll of polluting industries, melting of the glaciers and sea-level rise, technology, and the impact of tourism, over-fishing, and over-consumption. These are challenges that face not only the Arctic region and Iceland, but also here at home in North Carolina.
The exhibition will include sound and video installations, sculptural objects in a range of disciplines, original acrylic monoprints and collages, and other functional art that wrestles with these issues.
