The Spirit of Freedom Returns to Dare County Regional Airport
The Spirit of Freedom is back in town for the annual reenactment of the Berlin Candy Drop this Sunday. This event celebrates the Candy Bomber of Berlin from World War II, where American pilot, Lieutenant Gail S. Halvorsen repeatedly dropped candy to German children during the a blockade on supplies reaching the eastern side of the country. The Berlin Airlift Historical Foundation's C=54/R5-D aircraft, The Spirit of Freedom, returns to the Dare County Regional Airport for two candy drops on Sunday: at 1 p.m. for ages 6 and younger and at 1:30 p.m. for ages 7 and older. Following the candy drops, Santa will make a visit to the airport.
