29th Annual Big Sweep
Dare County residents have been strong supporters of the event since its inception in 1987. Last year more than 130 participants removed an estimated 695 pounds of trash from our beaches -- including 293 balloons which don’t weigh very much but certainly have a large, negative impact on marine life. Almost 4000 cigarette butts, 650 wrappers, all sorts of plastic, and a vast amount of fishing line and rope were also collected.
This year’s event will take place on October 3 from 9 a.m.–12 p.m. For more information, visit Surfrider Foundation's Outer Banks Chapter at outerbanks.surfrider.org.
Volunteers may pick up bags and data cards at these locations and then report to the beach access or soundside access of their choice:

After The Big Sweep cleanup, volunteers' data cards act as their ticket to TrashFest at the Outer Banks Brewing Station, where the Surfrider Foundation Outer Banks Chapter will have free food and drink including beer on tap and live music from 12:30 p.m.-4 p.m.
