Event Description: 

Join us as we explore the history and significance of the USS Monitor, the Civil War-era ironclad that sunk off the coast of Cape Hatteras in 1862 and became the first National Marine Sanctuary in 1975. We are excited to welcome archaeologist Tane Casserly and educator Kyra Burlingame from the Mariners’ Museum and Park in Newport News, VA for a day of Monitor filled fun. 

  • Tane Casserly will present "Ironclad Legacy: Celebrating 50 Years of NOAA's Monitor National Marine Sanctuary" at 1 p.m. in our auditorium. 
  • Join Kyra for an interactive activity, "The Ironclad Countdown" as well as other hands-on kids’ activities in the Education Room and displays about the history and significance of the shipwreck and insights about the newest research being done on the wreck.
