Bread Basics: Sourdough
Join local baker Jamie Wegener of Gutsy Grain for the first of Island Farm's winter workshop series - Bread Basics: Sourdough!
Sourdough is the oldest form of leavened bread, originating in ancient Egyptian civilizations somewhere around 1500 BC. We know that bread starters were used on the Outer Banks historically: some still exist in local kitchens today, the product of generations of care.
During this outdoor workshop participants will be taught the basic history and science behind sourdough bread, as well as the steps to successfully navigate the baking process.
This is a hands-on workshop: students will be actively mixing ingredients, as well as shaping and folding dough.
The cost of the workshop includes information and education on how to produce sourdough bread from scratch, two portions of sourdough dough, and sourdough starter (upon request). Participants will be required to bring a kitchen towel from home.
