Fiber Day
Celebrate spring with all things fiber at Island Farm! We are offering a chance to step into the world of 19th-century textile production through interactive, hands-on experiences. Visitors can try their hand at washing raw wool, carding and spinning the wool into yarn. Visitors can learn about yarn dyeing using natural dyes sourced from plants grown on the Farm. We will also offer crafting a wool bracelet and experiment with simple weaving. In addition to wool work, Island Farm will offer demonstrations of flax processing – an essential step in creating linen. Fiber Day is an essential experience in learning about the effort and talent required to produce fabrics commonly used in the 1800s. Hope to see you there!
A living history farmstead, Island Farm offers a tangible glimpse into coastal life on Roanoke Island in the mid-1800s.
