Drum Bite -- Adam Johnson of South Mills caught and released this 44 – inch bull red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) while fishing with cut bait from Jennette’s Pier in Nags Head on Tuesday, April 28. Red drum are North Carolina’s state saltwater fish and typically have at least one spot near their tail. Red drum have various names including channel bass, old drum and puppy drum, which typically refers to smaller, juvenile red drum usually under 8 pounds. At least three other drum were caught and released Tuesday and Wednesday. Jennette’s Pier transitions to its peak season hours of 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily beginning Friday, May 1.
