Offshore from Oregon Inlet

It’s often luck of the draw when heading offshore looking for mahi…. will the grass be lined up and holding where you land or scattered and lacking…..today we landed in a hayfield of streaks of grass everywhere with scattered big beds….. Mike Beard & crew caught a couple to start but scattered grass was tough to fish thru….I saw a more lined up area offshore, so we ran out there and saw a bunch of mahi jumping around, went over there and sure enough, here they came….a hundred or better and Mikes crew did great, boating their limit in short order….. we cleaned & iced up, put the spread out and started trolling around…. saw some bigger beds of grass offshore and trolled by them looking for a predator, and here he came….crashed the flat line dink bait…..HOOKED UP BLUE MARLIN…...20 minutes later, Tim Draughon, from Dobson, NC had a 100 lb blue marlin caught on 30# line along side the boat….his first ever and he did a great job of angling….... I don’t know that we had all the baits back out when two long rigger poles bowed over…..TUNA!! and the guys put a pair of 40-60# yellowfin in the boat….. put her in gear and again didn’t have all the poles out and we hooked and boated another tuna….. while fighting that one, yellowfin tuna came up jumping and chasing flying fish everywhere around us…..seen a few tuna grab flying fish in mid air….exciting show and it lasted about an hour during which time the guys boated 7 yellowfin total, with 4 in the 60# class…... when that all dissipated, we trolled around the same area and raised four white marlin, with Tim Draughon & James Danford each catching and releasing their first white marlin, while we pulled the hook on the other two.
