Outer Banks Chorus Spring Concerts
The concerts not only welcome spring but also mark the final conducting appearances for Dr. David F. Evans, who is retiring after more than seven years as director of the 50-member chorus.
The program includes many favorites that Dr. Evans had conducted over the years as a music faculty member at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Fredonia as well as new pieces. Among them are “Marietta” by Chandler York, “Salvation is Created” by Pavel Tschesnokoff, “Stardust” by Hoagy Carmichael, “Os Justi” by Anton Bruckner, “Good Night, Dear Heart” by Dan Forrest, “The Sound of Music” by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein, and “You’re the Top” by Cole Porter.
Some of the featured soloists are baritone Barry Ambrose; sopranos Kimberly Konstanzer, Jo Anne Swartz and Dana Walker; and altos Carolyn Duregger and Elaine Reed. Many of the selections will be performed a cappella; Cheryl Needham, pianist, will accompany the remaining pieces.
Audience members who have sung with the chorus in other seasons will join in singing the finale, “The Music of Life” by Joseph Martin, the group’s signature piece, at both the May 3 and May 17 performances.
Former students of Dr. Evans, now a SUNY emeritus professor, are traveling from several states to join the chorus for the May 17 presentation of the Anton Bruckner piece and participate in Dr. Evans’ retirement banquet that follows at Pamlico Jack’s.
Anyone wishing to attend the banquet should contact Sandy Byberg at 252-449-8562. Reservation deadline is Monday, May 11.
