Corolla Fish Report
We have a good one today!! We have had much better fishing this week along the beach in Corolla, it's not perfect but much improved. The water has been clean and clear and the current has not been too bad but reports of that dreaded seagrass has been a problem. We have a low tide in the mornings but a high tide in the late afternoon today is at 4:15 pm and I think the best fishing has been at the high tide mark in the evening we do see the fishing pick up here and on the piers. We have reports of a good mix of fish with the usual croaker, spot, and mullet, but we are also seeing bluefish, needlefish, pompano, and redfish AKA drum. There are menhaden schools out there along with minnows along the shoreline so there is action to be had if you know where to look. Now it's story time!
Today's photo has a good story behind it and was sent in by Daniel Bulian from West Virginia. He came into town and had never surf-fished so we set him up with what he needed with basic rigging and baits which were fish bites. He came back in a day or so later and said thanks you really set me up right and pulled his phone out to show me the picture of a really nice drum he had caught and I mentioned there's that old beginner's luck at play again. As the conversation continued he explained that his wife and two sisters started to say the fish looked sad and scared and wanted to go home, Daniel was thinking more like it would look really good on the BBQ. So the ladies kept up talking and said he looks like he's crying then they had tears so they got to Daniel and he safely released the fish back to the sea. Here is where I had a thought so I asked him so what did you have for dinner he paused and looked at me and said, Salmon They actually had me grill salmon, shrimp and beef kabobs. I can't tell you all how hard we all laughed that was just the funniest story I have heard in a while. But Daniel you ended up doing the right thing anyway as keeper size drum is 18" to 27" and your fish came in at 34" and around 25lbs. You may not got to grill the fish but you did walk away with a great picture and story I don't think you will soon forget but thanks for sharing the story and the laugh great job.
Now for some more news as I was doing this report I just had a walk-in customer and I asked how he was doing out there I knew there were drum starting to move around but he said his group so far this week had landed approximately 30 redfish so BA Bam there it is!!! They are here.
Offshore are filling the fish boxes up with a whole lotta mahi with some wahoo, sailfish, and white marlin on the move. The nearshore boats with ribbonfish. Spanish, blues, drum.
The fishing is great right now and we have charters available so don't miss out on some good action.
Send your fifing photos to obxbaitandtackle@yahoo.com and we thank you.
