The Dare Education Foundation made history on February 9th with its inaugural fundraising event featuring New York, NY Dueling Pianos. In a remarkable confirmation of the crucial role community support plays in shaping the education of Dare County's public school students, the evening brought together community partners and leaders, including Dare County Schools Superintendent Steve Basnight and members of the Board of Education and County Commissioners.

Held at the iconic 108 Budleigh in Manteo, the electrifying energy of NY NY Dueling Pianos created a night of unparalleled excitement and philanthropy. With the generous contribution of sponsor, Kellogg Supply Company, alongside support from various businesses and donors, the event raised an astounding $37,000, which significantly helped to realize DEF's mission of providing exceptional education opportunities for all students.

Registration is now open for next month's State of the Child Conference! Join Children & Youth Partnership for Dare County on Thursday, March 14th at Ramada Plaza in Kill Devil Hills to discuss and explore opportunities and long-term solutions to the needs of our community's children, youth and families, including child care, early learning, child well-being and enrichment/recreation.

If you've visited our gardens recently, chances are you've seen staff pruning our crepe myrtles quite severely! Don't be shocked, this practice has a history and a purpose. Pollarding is a pruning practice that dates back past the Elizabethan era. It involves repetitively cutting back the thinner and taller branches of a shrub or tree. Over years of pollarding, the shrub or tree will maintain denser growth at a stunted height. In most cases, pollarding was instituted because of the resource it could provide: a steady supply of thin branches that could be used as kindling or for crafting. In decorative gardens, such as the Elizabethan Gardens, pollarding is implemented for aesthetic purposes. Cutting the crepe myrtles back in the winter will mean denser foliage and bloom in the spring
