The little holes you see along the beach are from ghost crabs. Ghost crabs are skittish little critters with 360-degree vision, so they are hyper aware of any movements around them. They're also not big fans of the sunshine and will spend most of the day burrowed inside their holes, doing a little cleaning up by popping out on occasion to remove any excess sand.

Welcome back to Thursday's GREET THE GUIDES, where you'll get a little behind-the-scenes peek at this year's awesome team.

Meet Rick

While Rick might be new to horse-touring and Wild Horse Adventure Tours, he is certainly not new to the community. As a long-time resident and community member, Rick has been riding the north beaches his whole life. Even as a kid his father was one of the few people to have a key to the VA/NC fence once it was installed, and they used it frequently in their fishing travels up the coast.

"Everytime I drive over the dune I have the privilege of witnessing God's beautiful creations. From a foal by her mother's side to the dolphins frolicking in the waves, it is always a unique experience."

In just a few months, Rick has become a viable part of the W.H.A.T. team. He's embraced our philosophy of enjoyment without disruption, respect for the beaches and the horses and helping to create fun, fantastic, educational and enjoyable tours for our guests. "I like that we are not just a tour company," he says, adding that he really appreciates "all of the ways we help preserve these horses and their legacy." For example, the W.H.A.T.-owned properties in the 4x4 area that were purchased with the specific intention of keeping it a reserve for the safety, survival and enhancement of the horses.

We asked Rick about his favorite tour so far, and he was quick to answer, "How can you possibly pick a favorite!? We get the opportunity to drop on a 12-mile stretch of beach that the majority of this planet will never see! We meet people from all over, witness nature at it's finest, all while educating people and doing what we can to protect these Banker Horses (a descendant of the Spanish Colonial Mustang, now a breed all their own, a breed that you will only see here.) Working for a company that actually cares about the wellbeing and the future of these magnificent creatures and does something about it is definitely a huge bonus. Every tour is different and every tour is special!! I love my job!"
