Legends & Folklore of the Outer Banks,
Part One: THE NAG’S HEAD

Local legend tells of the Carolina "bankers" who operated near present-day Nags Head, North Carolina, who were known for pirating wrecks and murdering their passengers & crews. When the sea did not serve up wrecks for their plunder, they lured ships onto the shoals. On stormy nights, the bankers would hobble a horse, tie a lantern around the animal's neck, and walk it up and down the beach. Sailors at sea could not distinguish the bobbing light they saw from that of a ship which was anchored securely. Often they steered toward shore to find shelter. Instead, they became wrecked on the banks, after which their crews & passengers were killed.

Local artist Britton Ricketts has captured the tale of “The Lantern & The Nag” in the first of our new series of designs available for sale as autographed prints, stickers, and t-shirts in our new “Hop Shop” retail store. The design features the legendary nag being led along the dunes of Nags Head by John Borden of the “Lost Colony” of Roanoke. On July 22, 1587, the 118 men, women, and children of the Roanoke Colony first set foot on Roanoke Island and established the first English colony in the “New World.”

On July 22, 2022, the 62 men and women of Lost Colony Tavern work very hard each and every day to bring a uniquely British dining experience to the locals and visitors to Roanoke Island.

HERE WE GROW AGAIN!

We thank everyone for their patience as we replaced the floors in the dining room last weekend during our “Cans For Cans” event, and we’re back at it again this weekend to install our GIANT shiny brand-new three-compartment dishwashing sinks which will allow us to get our plates and glassware washed, rinsed, and sanitized BEFORE they even enter the dishwashing machine!

To that end, we will stop seating tables at 2:30pm to close the kitchen by 3:00 and have everything spotless by the time our plumbing team arrives at 4:00 to install this beauty. The timing isn’t great with it being July, but as new owners we are no longer grandfathered in, and the wonderful folks at the health department have worked very closely with us to ensure that we provide the safest workplace for our team and the most sanitary dining experience for our guests.

WE APPRECIATE YOUR PATIENCE & UNDERSTANDING as we continue working very hard to provide a unique Roanoke Island dining experience to Downtown Manteo…from the British Isles to the Barrier Islands!!
