Welcome back to Thursday's GREET THE GUIDES, where you'll get a little behind-the-scenes peek at this year's awesome team.

Meet Amanda.

Amanda grew up in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, has lived in Portland, Oregon three times as an adult and is currently savoring her days here on the Outer Banks. Well into her first year as a W.H.A.T. team member, Amanda says she loves driving our visitors on tours, "communing with the horses and the sea, and sharing a mission with each beautiful individual at this company - which itself is a powerful force for Love."

Amanda has always been an unstoppable, creative force who finds inspiration through painting everything around her. (Check out some of her art in the gift shop!) She is also a poet! Her first book of poetry can be found on Amazon--"The Evolution of Woman" by Amanda Joy Glover. Her second book can be found if you click on her name on Amazon (though not recommended for the faint of heart.) She shares her days with her two year-old daughter, a wonderful family, and her dog named Coral (the adventure dog!)

We are often curious about what draws folks to work with us. "I have worked at a lot of places and from what I've seen, W.H.A.T. is just the best--every single person here has a heart," she says. "It makes me very happy and I feel at peace working for a company like that, for people who know about and respect the Corolla wild horses and their environment here, these are your people."

This Labor Day Sunday, here's a twist on our feature: Greet the Guide. This peek at our man-with-a-mission, the face with with the fit, the "glad you're here" guy....is the Lefty. He's our a four-legged office charmer who enchants both his coworkers and our guests on the daily. Lefty's hometown is Corolla, NC where he shares his space with out tour guide extraordinaire, Jamie. Known to pal around with his favorite toy, Lambchop (minus a squeaker, chewed to freedom on a particularly slow May afternoon) Lefty can be seen working the gift shop for all the pets and snuggs a dog can stand. Lefty’s favorite work snack? Whatever you happen to be eating at the time.

We are often asked, "When is the best time to go and see the horses?" Because they are wild creatures, there is no definitive answer to that question. They go where they go when they want to go. Our job is to do everything within our power to make the experience a rewarding one for our guests.

But we will let you in on a little company secret--one of our favorite times to be on the beach, enjoying the ocean breezes, the stunning views, and exploring the sands are during our twilight tours. They are the last tours of the day, when evening just starts to settle in, silhouetting the dunes and if we are lucky, the horses too.. Things have a golden touch all around them. It's quite magical.

As a sweet little follow-up to the other post from our tour guide extraordinaire, Jason, one of his guests shared this adorable baby picture. (Fear not, this was on a zoomed photo, so the horses are well beyond a safe and unbothered space) Leaves us wondering, just going down for a nap? Or just waking up from one? 🥰

We're serious about well rounded adventures...check out this gorgeous heron recently photographed.

Herons are known for their large size, long legs, and "S" shaped neck and are commonly found in wetlands, marshes, lakes, streams, and along shorelines, where they primarily feed on fish.

They are often observed standing motionless in shallow water, patiently waiting to strike at prey with their long, pointed bill.
