All of our bathhouses have been winterized and are now closed for the season. The bathrooms at DOWDY PARK (3005 S. Croatan Hwy.) and TOWN PARK (415 W. Health Center Dr.) will remain OPEN, but will be locked nightly. Also, the water at our dog park at 227 W. Satterfield Landing Rd, will be turned off temporarily when we're expecting freezing temperatures.

Ocracoke has a long history of connection with the US Coast Guard and its predecessor, the US Lifesaving Service. We recently learned of an absurd lifesaving invention (not surprisingly, never seriously considered by the USLSS.) from 1879 (the Victorians were notorious for wacky inventions!) to be deployed after a shipwreck. The device was a hollow globe made of wood or metal with a hollow mast to provide fresh air, and to allow the occupants (comfortably seated on plush divans, no less!) to hoist distress signals. The inventor advertised that the craft would “never capsize even in the roughest seas.”

We are exhausted but our hearts are full. Over the last several days we have truly felt the meaning of "It takes a village." We are enormously thankful for everyone who has been out in the field and behind the scenes for the rescue and rehabilitation of over 500 cold-stunned sea turtles received at the NC Aquarium on Roanoke Island since December 1st. This tremendous community effort has been an inspiring sight to behold. We are so grateful and humbled by the gifts of talent, time, energy, and passion from so many folks here on the Outer Banks, many of whom are volunteers. From the bottom of our hearts -- THANK YOU.
