Published in 2001, David S. Cecelski’s “The Waterman’s Song: Slavery and Feeedom in Maritime North Carolina” is a compelling book about the lives of slave and free black fishermen, pilots, river men, sailors, and other laborers in our region. In fact, this was the first major study of slavery in the maritime South. If you’re a researcher or a history reader interested in this region and the era, you’ll be pulled in by the challenges these workers faced, but also enlightened to learn about the remarkable maritime work culture and democratic ideals they fostered.

The book is available in our gift shop, open through December 6.

WOW!! Yesterday we awoke to a pleasant surprise…being named the winner of the People’s Choice Award for Best Restaurant on Roanoke Island. There are so many fantastic restaurants here on the island, and we are incredibly humbled & honoured to have even been nominated let alone voted as the winner. We are thankful for our loyal patrons who have come out to support us during our first year in business as we set our sights on honouring the history of Roanoke Island by establishing a British tavern in Downtown Manteo, serving the traditional food, beer, and spirits of England, Ireland, Scotland & Wales right here on the Outer Banks. We are grateful to our local seafood purveyors and produce vendors who have worked closely with us to help us provide the freshest locally-sourced food to our community. And most importantly, we want to thank every single member of our amazing staff who work so hard every single day. We are extremely excited to move forward into our second year so we can continue to serve the traditional dishes of Great Britain made with fresh local ingredients to locals and visitors alike. THANK YOU to our wonderful community for all the support and for helping us remain open for both lunch & dinner all year long….from the British Isles to the Barrier Islands!!
