Event Description: 

The Town of Duck invites the public to attend the inaugural lecture of the Bias Speaker Series. Dr. Glen Bowman will present “John Henry Bias: Financial Success in a Time of Great Prejudice and Depression” in the Paul F. Keller Meeting Hall located at 1200 Duck Road. A light reception will be held at 6:30 p.m. for attendees.

The Bias Speaker Series is supported by the John H. & Frances Lane Bias Foundation, Inc. (The Bias Foundation), in collaboration with the Town of Duck.

Glen Bowman is Professor of History at Elizabeth City State University. Originally from suburban Philadelphia, he has been at ECSU since 1999. He earned his Ph.D. in History at the University of Minnesota. In 2015 he published Elizabeth City State University, 1891-2016: The Continuity of a Historical Legacy of Excellence and Resilience. All royalties from this book have gone to the ECSU Foundation. From March 2015 until December 2016 he wrote a weekly Sunday column for the Daily Advance on ECSU history. Formerly Chair of the History and Political Science Department as well as Director of International Programs, Dr. Bowman speaks regularly and enthusiastically at community gatherings about the history of African-American education and of Elizabeth City.

The Bias Speaker Series, in collaboration with the Town of Duck, will offer presentations throughout the year by educators, scientists, and community leaders on a variety of topics. All events are free and open to the public.
