A 400-Year-Old American Mystery

We all enjoy a good mystery, even purely fictional ones. But what about the thrill of a real-life mystery? In fact, the oldest mystery in this country? Yes, we’re all drawn in, and that’s exactly what Don Bernardo understands about our human psyche and why he wrote The Lost Colony: Legend of the Snow White Doe, a novella based in fact. If you know the Outer Banks, you know one of the most popular summer attractions is the outdoor drama, The Lost Colony. The play has drawn more than 4 million attendees over the 85 consecutive years since its first performance (well, except for 2020!), and it’s still going strong. The premise is based on the disappearance of 117 colonists who were attempting to establish the first English colony in America in 1587 here on Roanoke Island. Clues were left, but the colony was never found. Bernardo leads readers along an interesting path toward uncovering what happened but with a definite twist … a twist that adds a human and, in some ways of understanding it, a beyond-human explanation. Many retail outlets carry this novella, and you might be lucky enough to be given it as a welcome gift by your rental company or hotel. It’s a quick read, but you’ll find yourself keeping an eye out for a beautiful white doe!
