🌌 Nature’s Light Show Over the Outer Banks ✨
Tuesday night, the Outer Banks skies put on one of nature’s most breathtaking displays — the Aurora Borealis! Shades of pink and green danced overhead, painting a rare and magical glow across our coastal horizon. 💫
This stunning phenomenon happens when energy from the sun interacts with Earth’s magnetic field. During a geomagnetic storm, charged particles from the sun collide with gases in our atmosphere, releasing light that illuminates the sky. These storms are caused by bursts of solar wind — sometimes from powerful coronal mass ejections (CMEs) — that reach Earth and energize our magnetosphere, creating those beautiful, colorful waves of light we call the Northern Lights.
Even though the aurora is typically seen much farther north, strong geomagnetic activity made it visible here in the Outer Banks — a truly rare and unforgettable sight! ðŸŒ
