In preparation for Spooky Season, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is getting a costume change... we're temporarily dressing up as the Currituck Beach Lighthouse! As part of our ongoing restoration project, we're removing the old exterior paint. After that, we'll repoint the masonry, replace cracked bricks, and continue metal restoration. Here's the spooky part: Vapor blasting the paint was most effective at 70psi. This calibration resulted in near complete removal of all surface coatings and no degradation of the brick face or mortar joints. But the red garnet used in vapor blasting resulted in "bleeding" effects. Extra spooky, right? Don't worry - early next year, the iconic black and white spiral will return in all its glory with a new coat of paint!
