Due to the countless shipwrecks along the North Carolina coast, the Outer Banks has become known as “The Graveyard of the Atlantic.” Though we now know that the majority of these shipwrecks were due to running aground on the shallow shoals surrounding the barrier islands, previous generations had often attributed these wrecks to two entities: Poseidon and The Kraken.
