You may know Atlantic stingrays from our touch pools… but did you know they also live right here in the waters around Roanoke Island and the Outer Banks? 🌊
Atlantic stingrays are native to our local sounds, estuaries, tidal creeks, and shallow coastal waters, where they help keep ecosystems balanced by feeding on small crustaceans, worms, mollusks, and tiny fish. As they search for food along the bottom, they also stir up sediment, helping move nutrients through these habitats.
And while they may not look like sharks, Atlantic stingrays are actually close relatives! They’re part of the same group as sharks, skates, and rays, with skeletons made of cartilage instead of bone.
From our touch pools to our local waters, Atlantic stingrays are an important part of the coastal ecosystems that make the Outer Banks so special.
