I’m not sharing photos of the destruction along our beach in Buxton. I’m not sharing videos of houses collapsing and being ripped apart by the sea. It is real, it is sad, and Buxton will never be the same.
But I hope all of you will come back next year when the good weather returns. The beaches will be clean, new sea grass planted, maybe a few yaupon too. I hope rhe sand will be renourished by then, the new jetty nearly finished, doing its best to hold the line. It’s not forever, but it buys us more mornings with coffee on the deck, more evenings walking the shore line, more summers on this fragile, stubborn sandbar we call Hatteras Island.
That’s the deal we’ve always made with the ocean, take what you must, but leave us enough to keep calling it home.
